Activities
The School/Workshop will have a duration of 2 weeks (about 75 h: working
7 h/day for 11 days minus 2h for inauguration). Its a format will be similar
to that of the ICFA Schools on Instrumentation with about 7 to 10 Laboratory
Sessions including a practical session on Data Analysis (root) each of
7 h in average for a total of about 56 h.
Besides the laboratory sessions which are the main courses of the School/Workshop,
there will be about four Lecture courses (12 h if each lectures takes 3
h) and about 8 Review Talks (8 h) for a total of about 20 h. The number
of students will be about 40 from Mexico, Cuba, and other countries from
Latin America with the possibility of including some U. S. students as
well.
Each laboratory session will serve about 5-6 students at a time so that
each laboratory will be active for about 35 h.
The students will have some option of selecting the laboratory sessions
of their interest. In average each laboratory sessions will last two morning
or afternoon sessions on two consecutive days.

Travel Information
Morelia has its own international airport with direct flights
to Mexico City but also to some cities in the US like Chicago and
Los Angeles.
If you arrive to the international airport of Mexico City, you take
a taxi to the Observatory Bus Station and from there you can take a bus.
The best bus line is ETN, they
run buses to Morelia every hour, the travel time is 4 h. The second
best bus line is Autovias.
If you arrive to the international airport of Guadalajara, you take
a taxi to the Bus Station and from there you can take an ETN
bus to Morelia every 3-4 hours, the travel time is around 3:30 h.

Morelia
Morelia was
selected as the site for the ICFA Instrumentation Center due to its location
at the center of gravity of the institutions in Mexico who carry activities
in particle, nuclear, cosmic-ray and medical physics. About 1 million and
one of Mexico's colonial gems (UNESCO World Heritage Site), it is located
200 mi west of Mexico City. Aside from its historical attractions, see
map of historic center, Morelia is also the educational, cultural and
political center of the state. The
University
of Michoacan is the largest of the state (45 000 students) and
descends directly form the fist School of Latin America (Colegio de San
Nicolás Obispo, 1540). The University of Michoacan has both undergraduate
and graduate programs in Physics.
The Instrumentation Center in Morelia
Created recently with the support of the ICFA
Instrumentation, Innovation and Development Panel, the University
of Michoacan and a number of other Institutions from Mexico. Its objectives
are the following:
-
Provide short courses on instrumentation techniques for particle, nuclear,
cosmic-ray and medical physics for students from the various institutions
of Mexico and the region.
-
Establish a well equipped laboratory that can be visited by students (both
undergraduate and graduate) from Mexico and the region to obtain specific
training on the use of detectors, instruments, and/or experimental techniques
related to their specific research projects leading to their Bachelor´s,
Master´s or Ph. D. theses. Out of the community in Mexico, there
are several people involved actively on various international projects
which require state-of-the-art detectors and techniques (at present there
are experimental groups from Mexico working at FNAL, CERN, DESY, and the
Pierre Auger Observatory among other international laboratories).
-
The objectives may grow with time to include construction of detectors
and/or instruments for specific uses in basic or applied research in one
or several of the areas of interest. This will require, however, stronger
financial and human commitment from the participating institutions.

Language
The activities will be carried out Spanish (when possible and convenient)
and English.
Proceedings
All write-ups for laboratory sessions, lecture courses and review talks
will be published as proceedings of the school/workshop and a printed
copy will be mailed to all the participants early in 2003. They will
also be posted in the WEB page of the School/Workshop.
Speakers are
requested to bring copies of their manuscripts with them to distribute
to all the students from the very beginning of the school/workshop; they
must be in English language. The deadline for submission of the
camera-ready manuscripts for publication of the proceedings is November
29, 2002, however, if you have it ready in advance please e-mail it
to villasen@ifm.umich.mx.
The manuscript should be prepared using LaTeX or MS-WORD according
to the AIP style
for 6x9 inch format. Please download the necesary files and
information from the AIP website
http://proceedings.aip.org/proceedings/authors.jsp.
Cost and Funding
Since funds are limited for this activity, preference will be given
to student participants whose travel and subsistence expenses will be paid
by their home institutions or through research funds from their advisor
professors. There will be a registration fee of 100 USD to cover organizational
expenses. Participants who can obtain partial support elsewhere for their
attendance will also be given preference. Financial support will be offered
only to participants who attend the entire activity and preference will
be given to those who are actively pursuing research in related fields.
As the funds available will allow support to only a limited number of participants,
applicants should make every effort to secure financial support from funding
agencies within their home countries.

Deadline for Applications
The participation in the School/Workshop is by invitation
only. Potential participants are required to send the application form
(see below) before October 1, 2002. The International and Local
Organizing Committees will notify the result of the selection to all applicants
by October 18, 2002.
